Four Cases of Laryngeal Granuloma Following Endotracheal Intubation





Abstract
Endotracheal intubation is widely used with the development of anesthetic technique, but inflamation, edema, ulceration, and granuloma on the vocal cord are occasionally reported.
From Feb. 1987 to Nov. 1989, the authors experienced 4 cases intubation granuloma in our department and following results were obtained.
1) Age distribution showed mostly in 19 to 45 years old, all in female.
2) The location of granuloma was vocal process of aryternoid cartilage in 3 cases, posterior 1/3 of vocal cord in 1 case.
3) Morphology of mass were pedunculated in 3 cases and sessile in 1 case.
4) Main symptoms were hoarseness in 3 cases and aphonia with dyspnea in 1 case.
5) Duration between endotracheal intubation and symptom development was 15 days to 8 weeks. 6) In treatment, granuloma was removed by suspension laryngoscopy with surgical microscope, which three cases in general anesthesia and one case in topical anesthesia.
